Introduction

Sikhs are disciples of 10 gurus. The word Sikh means disciple.

History
  • Sikhism is a monotheistic religion
  • Founded in the 15th century
  • Founded by Guru Nanak, in Punjab, in north-west India
  • Sikhs believed that Guru Nanak obtained his message direct from the One Timeless Lord
  • Sikhs are easily identifiable because of their long beards and turbans
  • There are 200 temples called gurdwaras in India alone
  • Holy book: Guru Nanak Sahib (contains teachings and 6000 hymns)

Belief
  • Guru Nanak believed that people can be led to righteousness and to God through meditation, sharing fruit of hard work, and loving everyone
  • Prayers should be repeated multiple times each day
  • Do not worship idols, images, or icons (eliminate superstition and rituals)
  • Five K's (symbolic items worn by Sikhs)
    • Kesh ( long hair , which is never cut)
    • Kangha (comb)
    • Kaccha (short pants)
    • Kara (metal bracelet)
    • Kirpan (a ceremonial dagger)
  • Live in a truthful way
  • Support Equality of humankind (equality of gender)
  • Open to everyone.
  • No casteism
  • No monk, nuns, or hermits
  • Code of conduct after becoming Sikh using Amrit ceremony
    • You shall never remove hair from any part of the body
    • No tobacco or alcohol
    • No meat of animal slaughtered the Muslim way
    • No adultery
    • Assume a new name ending with Singh( meaning lion) for men, and Kaur (meaning princess) for women
God of Sikhism
  1. Sikhism started from a devotional movement among followers of Vishnu
  2. There are many names for God but there is one reality
  3. The one God is without form, or gender
  4. Everyone has direct access to God
  5. Way of salvation is found by focusing on God and not in self
  6. Salvation is achieved as the soul is united with God
  7. The power of sin and pride are destroyed as God's name is praised
  8. Until the soul is united with God in love, the individual keeps on being reincarnated
Gurus (masters) of Sikhism
Guru means a teacher, honored person, or saint. There are only 10 enlightened gurus in Sikhism. These ten are said to have the same truth, insight, and identity. Guru is like a ladder or boat to take the people to the Lord.
  1. The first guru : Nanak (1469-1539 AD)
  2. The second guru : Angad (1504-1552 AD)
  3. The third guru: Amar Das (1479-1574 )
  4. The fourth guru: Ram Das (1534-1581)
  5. The fifth guru: Arjan (1563-1606)
  6. The sixth guru: Har Govind (1595-1644)
  7. The seventh guru: Har Rai (1630-1661)
  8. The eighth guru: Har Krishan (1656-1664)
  9. The ninth guru: Tech Bahadur (1621-1675)
  10. The tenth guru: Gobind Singh (1666-1708)
After the last guru died, the authority was transferred to Sikh community. The last guru declared that the holy book itself would be the perpetual guru. There is no living guru in Sikhism today.
Sayings of Guru Nanak
  1. Without guru none can cross over to the other shore
  2. Word is the guru. Guru is the word
  3. Blessed is the word, which reveals the Lord's name
  4. God is one but he has innumerable forms
  5. The lord can never be established nor created
  6. As fragrance abides in the flower, the Lord abides in you. Why search for him without?

Sikhism Christianity
All can access God directly 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Power of sin and pride is broken by praising God Romans 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
Salvation is achieved by being united in love with God Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
All humans are good Romans 3:23-24 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Human beings get reincarnated until their soul is united with God in love Hebrews 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
There is no concept of repentance from sin. God is in everyone Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
There is no need for the redeemer to make atonement for our sins Christ paid for our sins:Romans 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Reflection
  1. Can meditation cleanse us from sin?
  2. Can goodworks pay the price for our sins?
  3. Sikhism says that God is in every person. Does the wicked have God in them?
