El Etymology

Jewish scholars believe that the unique name of God cannot be said ‘aloud’ since the name of God (YHVH) is holy and cannot be taken in vain. God’s unique name is unutterable. Since the LORD is unique, without rival, the Creator and LORD who is answerable to no one, He cannot be named. However God reveals himself as ‘I AM THAT I AM’ (YHWH) and throughout the scripture, we see the attributes or characteristics of God revealed to us. The multiplicity of names refers to different aspects of revelation rather than supposing that there is multiplicity of deities. Studying these attributes or names of God provide us different portraits of God’s revealed character in the bible.

  1. The Most High is the possessor/creator of in heaven. Abraham talks of the Most High to the king of Sodom in this way.
    1. 22. mjw;F> Mgpuhk; NrhNjhkpd; uh[hitg; ghu;j;J: Mgpuhik IRtupathdhf;fpNdd; vd;W ePu; nrhy;yhjgbf;F ehd; xU rul;ilahfpYk; ghjul;irapd; thiuahfpYk;> ckf;F cz;lhditfspy; ahnjhd;iwahfpYk; vLj;Jf;nfhs;Nsd; vd;W>
And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,
    2. 23. thdj;ijAk; G+kpiaAk; cilatuhfpa cd;djkhd Njtdhfpa fu;j;jUf;F Neuhf vd; ifia cau;j;JfpNwd;.
That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:
  2. Abram was blessed by the priest of El Elyon. Abraham gives the tithe (10%) of all that he won in the battle. Melchizedek was a type of Christ (a theophany) in the Old Testament
    1. Mjpahfkk; 14:18. md;wpAk;> cd;djkhd NjtDila MrhupadhapUe;j rhNykpd; uh[hthfpa nky;fpNrNjf;F mg;gKk; jpuhl;rurKk; nfhz;Lte;J>
And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
  3. God is Sovereign above all the earth, as the psalmist proclaims
    1. 9. fu;j;jhNt> G+kp KOtJf;Fk; ePu; cd;djkhdtu;; vy;yh Njtu;fspYk; ePNu kpfTk; cau;e;jtu;.
For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.
  4. God is Sovereign over every dominion or kingdom. The king of babylon (the biggest kingdom at that time) recognizes that he is not the most important person. He was exiled and started eating grass. He acknowledges the God of Israel as the Most High God, after his understanding returned.
    1. jhdpNay; 4:34. me;j ehl;fs; nrd;wgpd;G> NeGfhj;Ner;rhuhfpa ehd; vd; fz;fis thdj;Jf;F VnwLj;Njd;; vd; Gj;jp vdf;Fj; jpUk;gp te;jJ; mg;nghOJ ehd; cd;djkhdtiu ];Njhj;jpupj;J> vd;nwd;iwf;Fk; [Ptpj;jpUf;fpwtiug; Gfo;e;J kfpikg;gLj;jpNdd;; mtUila fu;j;jj;JtNk epj;jpa fu;j;jj;Jtk;> mtUila uh[;aNk jiyKiw jiyKiwahf epw;Fk;.
And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation:

And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
  5. God is sovereign over every nation and nations are like a drop in a bucket
    1. Vrhah 40:15. ,Njh> [hjpfs; Vw;wr;rhypy; njhq;Fk; JspNghyTk;> juhrpNy gbAk; J}rpNghyTk; vz;zg;gLfpwhu;fs;; ,Njh> jPTfis xU mZitg;Nghy; J}f;Ffpwhu;.
Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.

2. El Elyon - is Sovereign in Control (not Satan)
  1. Satan wanted to gain control and go above the Most High. However, he was cut down to the ground. God will always remain Sovereign for ever and ever and no attempt by man or enemy can change God’s position
    1. Vrhah 14:14. ehd; Nkfq;fSf;F Nkyhf cd;djq;fspy; VWNtd;; cd;djkhdtUf;F xg;ghNtd; vd;Wk; eP cd; ,Ujaj;jpy; nrhd;dhNa.

    2. 15. MdhYk; eP mfhjkhd ghjhsj;jpNy js;Sz;LNghdha;.
Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
  2. Even when Satan condemns us, God is in control and Jesus is interceding for us that we might overcome

Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

3. El Elyon - is Sovereign in our plans

  2. The Most High can thwart the plans of earthly kings. When the Assyrians came against the people of God, God thwarted the plans of the enemy
    1. Vrhah 14:24. ehd; epidj;jpUf;fpwgbNa elf;Fk;; ehd; epu;zapj;jgbNa epiyepw;Fk; vd;W Nridfspd; fu;j;ju; Mizapl;Lr; nrhd;dhu;.

When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.
    3. 9. fu;j;jUila [dNk mtUila gq;F; ahf;NfhG mtUila Rje;jutPjk;.
For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and he hath set the world upon them.
