El Etymology

Jewish scholars believe that the unique name of God cannot be said ‘aloud’ since the name of God (YHVH) is holy and cannot be taken in vain. God’s unique name is unutterable. Since the LORD is unique, without rival, the Creator and LORD who is answerable to no one, He cannot be named. However God reveals himself as ‘I AM THAT I AM’ (YHWH) and throughout the scripture, we see the attributes or characteristics of God revealed to us. The multiplicity of names refers to different aspects of revelation rather than supposing that there is multiplicity of deities. Studying these attributes or names of God provide us different portraits of God’s revealed character in the bible.

Elohim (God the Creator, Judge)  (Njtd; cUthf;fpatH, ePjpgjp)

Introduction
The word Elohim is the plural word for El or Eloah. It speaks of the plurality of God and the oneness of God, and it is the first word describing God in the Scriptures. Elohim also refers to the ‘Strong one’, the ‘Creator’ and ‘Judge’.
Mjpahfkk; 1:1. MjpapNy Njtd; thdj;ijAk; G+kpiaAk; rpU\;bj;jhu;.
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
The plurality of God in pagan religions refers to multiplicity of God. However in the bible, God is one person manifested in three distinct persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Elohim refers to the one God in the bible, and the council of God includes Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For example, when God created the first human, He said, “Let us make man in our image”. Although there are three distinct persons, they operate as one God, and there is oneness in the Godhead. So God refers to Himself as God (Elohim) and not gods.

And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
In this lesson, we will explore the name of Elohim as God the Creator.

Elohim (God the Creator)

1. Elohim the God who created the universe
  1. The bible provides the author of the entire universe. He is none other than our God, Elohim
    1. Mjpahfkk; 1:1. MjpapNy Njtd; (Elohim) thdj;ijAk; G+kpiaAk; rpU\;bj;jhu;.
In the beginning God(Elohim) created the heaven and the earth.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

2. Elohim, the Creator who is triune (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)
  1. God is a triune (three in one), even in Creation. We see Jesus in Creation.

  2. The Holy Spirit was also present in Creation, thus all three(Father, Son and Holy Spirit) working in unison.

7. Elohim - makes all types of people, for His Glory
  1. Sometimes we might wonder why some people are born lame or blind. Elohim has a purpose for everything that happens on earth and will use them for His Glory. When Jesus was enquired of the blindness of the man, Jesus affirms that he was born blind to glorify God through a miracle.

Conclusion
Elohim (Creator, Judge) is the God who deserves our adoration, praise and worship (Sumrall, 1995). Elohim (God) created the entire universe and is enthroned in the praises of His people. As we learn about the Creator and Judge, we can give Him our praise and worship every day.
Isaiah proclaims, that Elohim is Creator and our everlasting God.

Variations of Elohim (God) in Hebrew for extra personal research:

1. Elohim as Singular Noun
  1. Elohim occurs more than 2500 times in the Hebrew bible. Elohim is referred to as the singular noun, as the single God of Israel. For example, Elohim called out to Moses in the burning bush.

And when the LORD (Yahweh) saw that he turned aside to see, God (Elohim) called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

  2. Elohim, is grammatically Singular (i.e, it governs a singular verb or adjective), when it comes to the God of Israel or the God of Hebrews. Elohim is grammatically plural when it refers to pagan divinities.
