Introduction
The name of God cannot be taken in vain. Like the patriarchs, we can also call on the Names of God to draw strength and power in times of need. God’s names provide portraits of His Character and His Power. In this lesson, we will see the name of God used in General to draw focus on the person of God, throughout the Scriptures.

The Name of the LORD
1. The “Name of LORD” was used in General to refer to call the person of God Himself. It is a summary statement embodying the entire person and character of God.
- After Abraham was called, Abraham continues to move to the Place the LORD wants him to settle down. Abraham builds an altar to remember God’s acts and called on the name of the LORD, to seek His help and direction
-

And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.
- Abraham returns from Egypt and the LORD has blessed him with might cattle and riches. Abraham does not forget to call upon the name of the LORD as he settles down again
-

And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai;

Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

2. God proclaimed his own name before Moses. Moses has close encounter with God to see God’s glory and to hear God’s name.

And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.

And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.

3. As Moses climbs the mountain a second time, God proclaims his own name again, this time, enumerating his character at length.
- ahj;jpuhfkk; 34:4. mg;nghOJ NkhNr Ke;jpd fw;gyiffSf;F xj;j ,uz;L fw;gyiffis ,ioj;J> mjpfhyNk vOe;jpUe;J> fu;j;ju; jdf;Ff; fl;lisapl;lgbNa mt;tpuz;L fw;gyiffisAk; jd; ifapNy vLj;Jf;nfhz;L> rPdha;kiyapy; Vwpdhd;.
And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.

Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
4. The name of God is also incomprehensible. When the Angel of the LORD appeared (theophany of Jesus) to Manoah (soon-to-be father of Samson), the LORD reveals himself as ‘wonderful’ (or incomprehensible).
- epahahjpgjpfs; 13:17. mg;nghOJ kNdhth fu;j;jUila J}jid Nehf;fp: ePu; nrhd;dfhupak; epiwNtWk;NghJ> ehq;fs; ck;ikf; fdk;gz;Zk;gb ck;Kila ehkk; vd;d vd;W Nfl;lhd;.

And the angel of the LORD said unto him, Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?

5. The name of the LORD was used to minister unto God. Aaron and his sons and the tribe of Levi, were chosen to minister unto the name of the LORD.
- cghfkk; 18:5. mtDk; mtd; FkhuUk; ve;ehSk; fu;j;jupd; ehkj;ij Kd;dpl;L Muhjid nra;Ak;gb epw;Fk;nghUl;L> cd; Njtdhfpa fu;j;ju; cd; Nfhj;jpuj;jhu; vy;yhUf;Fs;Sk; mtidNa njupe;Jnfhz;lhu;.

And the priests the sons of Levi shall come near; for them the LORD thy God hath chosen to minister unto him, and to bless in the name of the LORD; and by their word shall every controversy and every stroke be tried:
6. The name of the LORD is used to worship God. Abraham worships the God who brought him from Ur of the Chaldeans, as an Everlasting God
- Mjpahfkk; 21:33. Mgpufhk; ngnau;nrghtpNy xU Njhg;ig cz;lhf;fp> rjhfhyKKs;s Njtdhfpa fu;j;jUila ehkj;ij mt;tplj;jpy; njhOJnfhz;lhd;.
And Abraham planted a grove in Beersheba, and called there on the name of the LORD, the everlasting God.
- Isaac also worships the God of his father.Mjpahfkk; 26:24. md;W uhj;jpupapNy fu;j;ju; mtDf;Fj; juprdkhfp: ehd; cd; jfg;gdhfpa MgpufhKila Njtd;> gag;glhNj> ehd; cd;NdhNl$l ,Ue;J> vd; Copaf;fhudhfpa Mgpufhkpdpkpj;jk; cd;id MrPu;tjpj;J> cd; re;jjpiag; ngUfg;gz;ZNtd; vd;whu;.
And the LORD appeared unto him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham's sake.
- 25. mq;Nf mtd; xU gypgPlj;ijf; fl;b> fu;j;jUila ehkj;ijj; njhOJnfhz;L> mq;Nf jd; $lhuj;ijg; Nghl;lhd;. mt;tplj;jpy; <rhf;fpd; Ntiyf;fhuu; xU Juit ntl;bdhu;fs;
And he builded an altar there, and called upon the name of the LORD, and pitched his tent there: and there Isaac's servants digged a well.

7. The name of the LORD cannot be taken in vain. The name of the LORD cannot be uttered meaninglessly. The name of the LORD should be revered and should not be used thoughtlessly (example. We should not swear in the name of God, or by anything in heaven or earth).

8. Paul asserts that we need to call on God, who made the heavens and the earth even though we did not do so in the past. In Him we live and move and have our being.

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

Conclusion
God defines Himself as the God of the whole earth. He created us. He appoints seasons and times. He wants us to call Him and seek Him. We should call upon Him at all times. Knowing the Name and calling on the Name provides the believer with everything he needs to complete one’s purpose in life.

For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
ePjpnkhopfs; 18:10. fu;j;jupd; ehkk; gyj;j JUfk;; ePjpkhd; mjw;Fs; Xbr; RfkhapUg;ghd;.
The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.
