Jesus Christ - The Second Adam

Introduction

Through the first Adam, sin and death came into the world. But through the second Adam, Jesus Christ, life and resurrection came. The first man brought death and decay. The second Adam, brought immortal life, and immortal body that never decays. As we have borne the image of the earthly man, so we also bear the image of the heavenly man, Jesus Christ. In this lesson, Christological comparison is made between the first Adam and the second Adam.

In this study of Christology, we will study Jesus as the Divine Savior.

The Second Adam

1. Sin and Death came through first Adam. Resurrection and New Life came through Jesus Christ (Second Adam)
  1. The first man Adam, brought sin into the world
    1. Mjpahfkk; 3:17. gpd;G mtu; Mjhik Nehf;fp: eP cd; kidtpapd; thu;j;ijf;Fr; nrtpnfhLj;J> Grpf;fNtz;lhk; vd;W ehd; cdf;F tpyf;fpd tpUl;rj;jpd; fdpiag; Grpj;jgbapdhNy> G+kp cd; epkpj;jk; rgpf;fg;gl;bUf;Fk;; eP capNuhbUf;Fk; ehnsy;yhk; tUj;jj;NjhNl mjpd; gyidg; Grpg;gha;.
      And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
    2. 18. mJ cdf;F Ks;Sk; FUf;Fk; Kisg;gpf;Fk;; ntspapd; gapu;tiffisg; Grpg;gha;.
      Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
    3. 19. eP G+kpapypUe;J vLf;fg;gl;lgbahy;> eP G+kpf;Fj; jpUk;Gkl;Lk; cd; Kfj;jpd; Ntu;itahy; Mfhuk; Grpg;gha;; eP kz;zhapUf;fpwha;> kz;Zf;Fj; jpUk;Gtha; vd;whu;.
      In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
  2. Christ died and rose from the dead, to redeem us from Sin and Death and thus replaced the punishment brought through first Adam.
    1. I nfhupe;jpau; 15:3. ehd; mile;jJk; cq;fSf;Fg; gpujhdkhf xg;Gtpj;jJk; vd;dntd;why;> fpwp];Jthdtu; Ntjthf;fpaq;fspd;gb ekJ ghtq;fSf;fhf kupj;J>
      For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
    2. 4. mlf;fk;gz;zg;gl;L> Ntjthf;fpaq;fspd;gb %d;whk; ehspy; capu;j;njOe;J>
      And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
    3. 5. NfghTf;Fk;> gpd;G gd;dpUtUf;Fk; juprdkhdhu;.
      And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:
    4. 6. mjd;gpd;G mtu; Ie;E}WNgUf;F mjpfkhd rNfhjuUf;Fk; xNuNtisapy; juprdkhdhu;; mtu;fspy; mNefu; ,e;ehs;tiuf;Fk; ,Uf;fpwhu;fs;> rpyu; khj;jpuk; epj;jpiuaile;jhu;fs;.
      After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.
  3. Just as death came through Adam, Life came through Jesus
    1. 21. kD\dhy; kuzk; cz;lhdgbahy;> kD\dhy; kupj;Njhupd; capu;j;njOjYk; cz;lhapw;W.
      For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.
    2. 22. MjhKf;Fs; vy;yhUk; kupf;fpwJNghy> fpwp];JTf;Fs; vy;yhUk; capu;g;gpf;fg;gLthu;fs;.
      For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.
    3. 23. mtdtd; jd;jd; tupirapNy capu;g;gpf;fg;gLthd;> Kjw;gydhdtu; fpwp];J; gpd;G mtu; tUifapy; mtUilatu;fs; capu;g;gpf;fg;gLthu;fs;.
      But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.

2. Corruption was replaced with Incorruption through the Second Adam
  1. Our bodies became corrupt because of first Adam. The body was subject to decay. But the resurrected body will be exempted from decay and corruption
    1. I nfhupe;jpau; 15:42. kupj;Njhupd; capu;j;njOjYk; mg;gbNa ,Uf;Fk;. mopTs;sjha; tpijf;fg;gLk;> moptpy;yhjjha; vOe;jpUf;Fk;;
      So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
    2. 43. fdtPdKs;sjha; tpijf;fg;gLk;> kfpikAs;sjha; vOe;jpUf;Fk;; gytPdKs;sjha; tpijf;fg;gLk;> gyKs;sjha; vOe;jpUf;Fk;.
      It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power:
    3. 44. n[d;k ruPuk; tpijf;fg;gLk;> Mtpf;Fupa ruPuk; vOe;jpUf;Fk;; n[d;k ruPuKKz;L> Mtpf;Fupa ruPuKKz;L.
      It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.
  2. Adam became a living soul, but Christ became the life-giving spirit.
    1. Mjpahfkk; 2:7. Njtdhfpa fu;j;ju; kD\idg; G+kpapd; kz;zpdhNy cUthf;fp> [PtRthrj;ij mtd; ehrpapNy Cjpdhu;> kD\d; [Pthj;Jkhthdhd;.
      And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
  3. Christ became not just a man (incarnation, immanuel), but a life-giving spirit. Through His Resurrection, we are going to receive new life.
    1. I nfhupe;jpau; 15:45. me;jg;gbNa Ke;jpd kD\dhfpa Mjhk; [Pthj;Jkhthdhd; vd;nwOjpapUf;fpwJ> gpe;jpd Mjhk; capu;g;gpf;fpw Mtpahdhu;.
      And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
    2. 46. MfpYk; Mtpf;Fupa ruPuk; Ke;jpdjy;y> n[d;kruPuNk Ke;jpdJ; Mtpf;Fupa ruPuk; gpe;jpdJ.
      Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

3. Christ the Progenitor of New Creation.
  1. Adam brought the entire human race into death. Jesus, the Second Adam brought new life..
    1. II nfhupe;jpau; 5:14. fpwp];JtpDila md;G vq;fis neUf;fp VTfpwJ; Vndd;why;> vy;yhUf;fhfTk; xUtNu kupj;jpUf;f> vy;yhUk; kupj;jhu;fs; vd;Wk;;
      For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:
    2. 15. gpioj;jpUf;fpwtu;fs; ,dpj; jq;fSf;nfd;W gpioj;jpuhky;> jq;fSf;fhf kupj;J vOe;jtUf;nfd;W gpioj;jpUf;Fk;gb> mtu; vy;yhUf;fhfTk; kupj;jhnud;Wk; epjhdpf;fpNwhk;.
      And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.
    3. 16. Mifahy;> ,JKjw;nfhz;L> ehq;fs; xUtidAk; khk;rj;jpd;gb mwpNahk;; ehq;fs; fpwp];JitAk; khk;rj;jpd;gb mwpe;jpUe;jhYk;> ,dp xUNghJk; mtiu khk;rj;jpd;gb mwpNahk;.
      Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
    4. 17. ,g;gbapUf;f> xUtd; fpwp];JTf;Fs;spUe;jhy; GJr;rpU\;bahapUf;fpwhd;; gioaitfs; xope;JNghapd> vy;yhk; Gjpjhapd.
      Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
  2. The old order in the flesh, that distinguished people according to religious ethnicity (Jew/Gentile), social status (slave/free) and gender (male/female) does not count anything, in the new order of creation.
    1. fyhj;jpau; 6:15. fpwp];J ,NaRTf;Fs; tpUj;jNrjdKk; xd;Wkpy;iy> tpUj;jNrjdkpy;yhikAk; xd;Wkpy;iy; GJ rpU\;bNa fhupak;.
      For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
    2. fyhj;jpau; 3:27. Vnddpy;> cq;fspy; fpwp];JTf;Fs;shf> Qhd];ehdk; ngw;wtu;fs; vj;jidNgNuh mj;jidNgUk; fpwp];Jitj; jupj;Jf;nfhz;Bu;fNs.
      For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
    3. 28. A+jndd;Wk; fpNuf;fndd;Wkpy;iy> mbiknad;Wk; RahjPdndd;Wkpy;iy> Mnzd;Wk; ngz;nzd;Wkpy;iy; ePq;fnsy;yhUk; fpwp];J ,NaRTf;Fs; xd;whapUf;fpwPu;fs;.
      There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

4. Christ, the Second Adam, brought immortality
  1. Adam’s body was brought to death and decay. But in contrast to Adam, Jesus’ body did not see decay. The risen body of Jesus Christ is quite the opposite. It is ‘of heaven’ and is therefore without the possibility of decay
    1. I nfhupe;jpau; 15:42. kupj;Njhupd; capu;j;njOjYk; mg;gbNa ,Uf;Fk;. mopTs;sjha; tpijf;fg;gLk;> moptpy;yhjjha; vOe;jpUf;Fk;;
    3. Nahthd; 14:19. ,d;Dk; nfhQ;rf;fhyj;jpNy cyfk; vd;idf; fhzhJ> ePq;fNsh vd;idf; fhz;gPu;fs;; ehd; gpiof;fpwgbapdhy; ePq;fSk; gpiog;gPu;fs;.
      Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

5. Christ, the Second Adam, brought the heavenly image
  1. We were all created after the image of the fallen man. Jesus came as the true bearer of divine images. Just as we lived in the past according to the earthly man, we are called live in according to the divine image now, so that we will be raised to life immortal, those who bear his image.
    1. I nfhupe;jpau; 15:47. Ke;jpd kD\d; G+kpapypUe;Jz;lhd kz;zhdtd;; ,uz;lhk; kD\d; thdj;jpypUe;J te;j fu;j;ju;.
      The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
    2. 48. kz;zhdtd; vg;gbg;gl;ltNdh kz;zhdtu;fSk; mg;gbg;gl;ltu;fNs; thdj;Jf;Fupatu; vg;gbg;gl;ltNuh> thdj;Jf;Fupatu;fSk; mg;gbg;gl;ltu;fNs.
      As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
    3. 49. NkYk; kz;zhdtDila rhaiy ehk; mzpe;jpUf;fpwJNghy> thdtUila rhaiyAk; mzpe;Jnfhs;Nthk;.
      And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.

6. Jesus, the Second Adam, is the only way to Resurrection and the Life
  1. There is a promise to all believers, that we will all rise to new life. Just as death came through Adam, Resurrection comes through Jesus Christ
    1. Nahthd; 11:24. mjw;F khu;j;jhs;: capu;j;njOjy; elf;Fk; filrpehspNy mtDk; capu;j;njOe;jpUg;ghd; vd;W mwpe;jpUf;fpNwd; vd;whs;.
      Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
    2. 25. ,NaR mtis Nehf;fp: ehNd capu;j;njOjYk; [PtDkhapUf;fpNwd;> vd;id tpRthrpf;fpwtd; kupj;jhYk; gpiog;ghd;;
      Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
    3. 26. capNuhbUe;J vd;id tpRthrpf;fpwtndtDk; vd;nwd;iwf;Fk; kupahkYk; ,Ug;ghd;; ,ij tpRthrpf;fpwhah vd;whu;.
      And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou thi
  2. Death has been swallowed up in Victory. Through faith in the Second Adam, we overcome death.
    1. I nfhupe;jpau; 15:53. mopTs;sjhfpa ,J mopahikiaAk;> rhTf;NfJthfpa ,J rhthikiaAk; jupj;Jf;nfhs;sNtz;Lk;.
      For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
    2. 54. mopTs;sjhfpa ,J mopahikiaAk;> rhTf;NfJthfpa ,J rhthikiaAk; jupj;Jf;nfhs;Sk;NghJ> kuzk; n[akhf tpOq;fg;gl;lJ vd;W vOjpapUf;fpw thu;j;ij epiwNtWk;.
      So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.
    3. 55. kuzNk! cd; $u; vq;Nf? ghjhsNk! cd; n[ak; vq;Nf?
      O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
    4. 56. kuzj;jpd; $u; ghtk;> ghtj;jpd; ngyd; epahag;gpukhzk;.
      The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
    5. 57. ek;Kila fu;j;juhfpa ,NaRfpwp];JtpdhNy ekf;F n[aq;nfhLf;fpw NjtDf;F ];Njhj;jpuk;.
      But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

7. Jesus, the Second Adam, wants us to live in a way to obtain Resurrection
  1. Jesus wants us to live according to the image of Second Adam, putting on the Lord Jesus Christ and walking according to the new creature (born-again nature)
    1. Nuhku; 13:11. epj;jpiuiatpl;L vOe;jpUf;fj;jf;f Ntisahapw;nwd;W> ehk; fhyj;ij mwpe;jtu;fsha;> ,g;gb elf;fNtz;Lk;; ehk; tpRthrpfshdNghJ ,ul;rpg;G rkPgkhapUe;jijg; ghu;f;fpYk; ,g;nghOJ mJ ekf;F mjpf rkPgkhapUf;fpwJ.
      And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
    2. 12. ,uT nrd;WNghapw;W> gfy; rkPgkhapw;W; Mifahy; me;jfhuj;jpd; fpupiafis ehk; js;sptpl;L> xspapd; MAjq;fisj; jupj;Jf;nfhs;sf;flNthk;.
      The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
    3. 13. fspahl;Lk; ntwpAk;> Ntrpj;jdKk; fhktpfhuKk;> thf;FthjKk; nghwhikAk; cs;stu;fsha; elthky;> gfypNy elf;fpwtu;fs;Nghyr; rPuha; elf;ff;flNthk;.
      Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
    4. 14. Ju;,r;irfSf;F ,lkhf cliyg; NgzhkypUe;J> fu;j;juhfpa ,NaRfpwp];Jitj; jupj;Jf;nfhs;Sq;fs;.
      But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

Conclusion

Christ is the center of the bible. By contrasting the first man with the Second Man from heaven (Second Adam), Paul brings to life, the surety of resurrection, new life and new order. Just as Isaiah predicted the creation of new heavens and new earth in the old testament, Jesus brought new life in the heart of every believer, and eventually will clothe us with new immortal body, before the creation of new heavens and the new earth.
